
SA’s elections stand out globally ‘for very real’ threat of violence
A report by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) revealed that the period leading up to the 2024 South African election was marked by significant threats of violence, including politically motivated assassinations occurring approximately every two weeks between January and April.
This widespread sense of lawlessness was largely attributed to the combined influence of criminal networks and state-embedded actors fueling criminal activities.
