CINIA leaves it mark on historic first African ICA Conference

The first-ever African edition of the International Communication Association (ICA) Conference was held in Cape Town from 4 to 8 June, with the Centre for Information Integrity in Africa (CINIA) maintaining a strong presence throughout the landmark event.

ICA is the world’s leading academic association dedicated to the study, teaching and application of all aspects of human and mediated communication. This year’s conference attracted more than 3,000 delegates to the Cape Town International Convention Centre for five days of panel discussions, research presentations, plenary sessions and networking opportunities.

CINIA Director Prof. Herman Wasserman, alongside colleagues from the Stellenbosch University Department of Journalism, served on the local organising committee for the conference.

Wasserman also chaired and participated in several sessions, presented a paper alongside CINIA Researcher Yossabel Chetty, and launched a book exploring the role of community media in South Africa.

Ahead of the main conference, CINIA co-hosted a one-day preconference in Stellenbosch titled Global Disruptions: Platforms, Power and Contested Communication. The event brought together scholars from around the world to examine how media and communication are reshaping, challenging and disrupting states and societies in an era of profound global change.
